Picture the moment someone needs you. They are on their phone, in the car, on a lunch break. They type in the thing they need: "beauty therapist near me," "life coach Sydney," "one person business website." A few years ago, that search sent them to a page of blue links. You showed up or you did not, but at least the door was the same door for everyone.
Today, Google might answer the question itself, right there on the results page, before your name ever appears.
48% of tracked Google searches triggered an AI Overview as of February 2026, up from 31% a year earlier. BrightEdge, Weekly AI Search Insights, 2026.An AI Overview is the block of text Google now writes at the top of the results page. It reads a handful of sources, blends them into a short answer, and shows that answer before a single organic link. Some searchers read it and move on. They never reach your site, your Google Business Profile, or your booking page.
This is not a small shift. It is the biggest change to how people find a business since Google Maps put the map pack on every local search. Let's go through what changed, and what you can do about it starting this week.
Three things changed at once.
1. The click dropped hard.
When an AI Overview appears above a search result, fewer people click through to any website at all. Seer Interactive's 2026 study found the average organic click-through rate on those searches fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, a drop of 61%. (Seer Interactive, 2026)
That is not because your ranking dropped. Your page can sit in the exact same spot on the page and still get far fewer visits, because fewer people scroll past the answer at the top.
2. More people leave without clicking anything.
Zero-click searches, the ones where a person gets their answer and closes the tab, climbed from 56% to 69% of all Google searches between May 2024 and May 2025, according to Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Roundtable. (Search Engine Roundtable, 2025)
For a one-person business, this is the quiet part that matters most. You are not just competing with the shop down the road anymore. You are competing with a summary that answers the question for free, on the spot, with no ads and no booking link, unless your business is the one it chooses to cite.
3. Getting cited is worth more than ever.
120% more organic clicks per impression go to brands cited inside an AI Overview, compared with brands that are not cited on the same search. Seer Interactive, AIO Impact on Google CTR, 2026 Update. Here is the part worth sitting with. Being cited by name inside the AI Overview is not a small bonus. It roughly doubles the clicks you get on that search, per the same study. Businesses that show up inside the answer, not just below it, are the ones still getting found.

The part that actually helps you.
Here is some good news buried in the data. Local, service-based searches, the kind most one-person businesses live on, trigger an AI Overview far less often than general questions. One analysis put AI Overviews at only about 7% of local searches right now. (Digital Information World, 2026)
That gap will not stay open forever. The businesses getting ahead of it now are the ones who will still be found when it closes. Three things make the difference, based on how AI Overviews choose what to cite.
- A complete, active Google Business Profile. Hours, services, and photos kept current. Every review answered. This is one of the clearest signals the AI systems read.
- Pages that answer a specific question, not a general one. "How much does a lash lift cost in Parramatta" beats a page that just says "we offer lash services." Specific answers get cited. Generic ones do not.
- Structured data on every page. Code that tells Google exactly who you are, where you work, and what you offer, in a format a machine can read directly instead of guessing from plain text.
This is exactly why every OPB build ships with clean structured data and specific, real pages from day one, not bolted on months later once the traffic has already dropped. A website built for 2022 is not built for how people actually search in 2026.

What to do this week.
You do not need to overhaul anything today. Start small and specific.
Open your Google Business Profile and check three things: are your hours right, have you replied to your last five reviews, and is your most recent photo actually recent. Then look at your website and ask a blunt question. If a stranger who has never heard of you landed on your homepage, would they find a specific, honest answer to what they actually want to know, or a page that could belong to any business in any city?
If the honest answer is the second one, that page is not ready for how people search now.
